Alice's Story

Jack HHCS

Jack is an 86 year old retired miner, his wife died 16 years ago and Jack still lives in the terraced house where they brought up their family. Like many ex miners Jack suffers from chest problems and needs to use a nebuliser, he also has arthritis particularly in his hands which limits what he can do. Jack needs some help with getting up and going to bed, managing his nebuliser and other medication and making his meals. His home support assistant, Alan, visits 4 times a day to help Jack get up washed and dressed, make his meals, manage his medication and get ready for bed. Since his wife died Jack has appreciated the company of his little dog, Misty, unfortunately he is not always able to take Misty out now, but he knows Alan will be there to help. Jack says “the carers from Hetton Home Care have been marvellous, not being able to do things for yourself anymore is terrible, but they help me with what I need without taking over and put me at ease. Alan and me enjoy talking about the old days at the pit and when the other ones come we always have something different to talk about. When Alan is off on holiday Marjorie from the office phones to let me know who will be coming instead. I couldn’t do without them”
